2023 COURAGE to WRITE Writer of Note Christina Chiu speaks on “the implications of race and gender bias in medicine.”

August 30, 2023

2023 COURAGE to WRITE Writer of Note Awardee Feature of the Week:

Christina Chiu, Failing to Thrive: A Story about Race and Gender Bias in Medicine (Nonfiction Memoir)

As a mother of a medically-fragile child, Chiu’s Failing to Thrive: A Story about Race and Gender Bias in Medicine speaks to how inequities play out when it comes to mothering and medicine.

“Asian American infants are 40% more likely to die from maternal complications. People need to know the implications of race and gender bias in medicine.”

Christina’s work explores the intersections of race and gender with a Chinese-American focus. She hones in on her personal experience of her child’s birth, and the grave biases in medicine that occured. Her memoir has allowed her to question what she can do to create more justice in this world.
