Should Human Life Be Optimized? Read Anna Louie Sussman’s Three-Part Series on Human Embryos

March 28, 2025

For the past two and a half years, COURAGE to WRITE Writer of Note Anna Louie Sussman has been working on a three-part series for The New York Times about human embryos.

The first story, “What Do We Owe this Cluster of Cells?” was published March 25th. Read the full first piece here.

The second story, “Should Human Life Be Optimized?” was published April 1st. Read the full second piece here.

The third part of the series, “Are Embryos Property or People?” was published on April 8th. Read the full third piece here.

The book for which she was awarded a grant, Inconceivable: Reproduction in an Age of Uncertainty, explores how contemporary capitalism has become increasingly hostile to creating the families we desire.
