Bird of the Month: Common North American Songbirds is a collection of twelve essays.

Julia Zarankin is a Toronto-based Soviet émigré writer, birder and Yiddish translator. Her memoir, Field Notes from an Unintentional Birder, is a Canadian bestseller and her work has
appeared in Audubon, The Walrus, Sierra Club Magazine, Threepenny Review, Orion, Canadian Geographic and The Globe and Mail. Her translation, from Yiddish to English, of Shifra Lipshitz’s Dreams and Reality is forthcoming from Cornell University Press in late 2026. She is currently working on a series of books about common birds, forthcoming with Greystone Books.
