Alex Danchev was an unorthodox Professor of International Relations at The University of St Andrews. He wrote extensively on art and political violence in the modern period. Some of this work is collected in an influential book of essays, On Art and War and Terror.
He was also the author of a number of internationally acclaimed biographies, among them the philosopher-statesman Oliver Franks, the military writer Basil Liddell Hart, and the artists Georges Braque and Paul Cézanne. His fellowship time was focused on a book about the life of the surrealist painter René Magritte. He was a fellow in the fall of 2014.
