2023 COURAGE to WRITE Awardee Camille Wanliss “challenges the boundaries of Western culture”

June 14, 2023

2023 COURAGE to WRITE Awardee Feature of the Week:

An Ornament and a Disgrace (Historical Novel), New York, NY

An Ornament and a Disgrace is a novel about land and legacy set in 1960s Jamaica.

Camille’s historical novel hones in on a specific time in Jamaica’s history: the booming of sugar and banana plantations, changes in various industries and tourism, and exploitation and displacement. One family operating a small sugar estate finds itself at odds with big corporations greedy for land.

“My aim is to create complex yet accurate portrayals of Caribbean identity that challenge the boundaries of Western culture. My hope is that readers, specifically those of Caribbean descent, find themselves reflected in this work.”

Camille hopes this labor of love will challenge the boundaries of Western culture. After years of research, she hopes the book will be finished by the end of year.
