May Lee-Yang Centers Hmong Women Protagonists

August 19, 2024

Meet May Lee-Yang, a 2024 COURAGE to WRITE Writer of Note working on her short story collection, The Happy Life.

The Happy Life is a collection of short stories that center Hmong women protagonists who are outsiders within their own community across the span of 1955 to 2018.

May Lee-Yang is a multi-genre writer, performance artist, and educator. Her theater-based works include The Korean Drama Addict’s Guide to Losing Your Virginity, Confessions of a Lazy Hmong Woman, and Ten Reasons Why I’d Be a Bad Porn Star, which use comedy and pop culture to interrogate race, gender, and identity.

An exciting update from May: “I’ve been working with mentor Sun Yung Shin to edit some stories and re-think titles. For example, “A Perfectly Normal Farewell” will most likely be changed to “A Tea of Boiled Keys.” I’m also planning to send some stories out for publication consideration in September.”
