Melody Cooper

March 11, 2024

Northern Cross (Screenplay), Los Angeles, CA

(c) Dan Ostergren

In a story laced with magical realism, a Black U.S. Army vet is forced to face her past in Afghanistan when she helps a Mexican immigrant and her child go on the run across the country.

“With NORTHERN CROSS I want to open an audience’s eyes to the multi-ethnic complexity of immigration issues, humanize those who cross borders and examine those who stand in the way.”

Melody won Urbanworld Film Festival’s Grand Jury Prize for Best Screenplay for NORTHERN CROSS. Other credits: Sundance Episodic Lab Fellow; co-producer, Power Book IV: Force; Law & Order: SVU; upcoming feature adaptation of fantasy novel “Beasts of Prey” and sold a genre TV project (both Netflix). Melody also writes comic books (OMNI). Co-founder of NYX Horror Collective, which supports women horror filmmakers, Melody produced 13 MINUTES OF HORROR (Shudder). Melody has been invited to a 2024 Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Residency in Italy to develop a climate TV project and sci-fi novel and recently traveled to Antarctica to do research.
