Black Rice (Novel), Chicago, IL

(c) M. Brandt

Black Rice is a historical novel that explores centuries-long connections between China and people of African descent, as told by five members of an Afro-Asian family.

“Like Black Tea, Black Cake, the Other Side of Paradise, and similar works of creative expression, I hope that Black Rice contributes to the discourse between communities of the Sino-Black Diaspora.”

Sandra Jackson-Opoku is the author of two novels, The River Where Blood is Born and Hot Johnny and the Women Who Loved Him. She coedited the anthology Revise the Psalm: Work Celebrating the Writing of Gwendolyn Brooks. Her fiction, nonfiction, and dramatic works are widely published and produced. Professional recognition includes a NEA Fellowship, the American Library Association Black Caucus Award, a City of Chicago Esteemed Artist Award, the Globe Soup Story Award, a Pushcart Prize nomination, the Circle of Confusion Writers Discovery Fellowship, and other awards. She presents literary readings and writing workshops throughout the country and around the world.
