Sophia Huneycutt’s “The House Built on Alligator Bones” is forthcoming from Dutton Books!

March 8, 2025

Congratulations to COURAGE to WRITE grantee Sophia Huneycutt, whose novel The House Built on Alligator Bones is now forthcoming from Dutton Books / Penguin Random House!

In The House Built on Alligator Bones, a woman with a violent past learns she has the chance to inherit her estranged family’s alligator empire in Florida, only to uncover a cursed legacy and long-buried secrets that rekindle her worst fears about her dark nature—and threaten her very life.

This is especially exciting, as this is the project for which Sophia was awarded a grant!

Sophia Huneycutt is a Floridian writer living in Columbus, Ohio. A recipient of The de Groot Foundation’s 2024 COURAGE to WRITE grant, she’s also the winner of the Porch Prize, judged by Kevin Wilson, and the Helen Earnhart Harley Creative Writing Fellowship Award, judged by Christine Sneed. Her fiction appears in Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, Nashville Review, and STORY, where she’s since been appointed Managing Editor. She has received creative and financial support from Tin House and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and she holds an M.F.A. from The Ohio State University.
