Julie Kim Reconciles Ableism through Parenthood

October 2, 2024

Meet Julie Kim, a 2024 COURAGE to WRITE grantee working on her memoir, To Raise Wonderful Hell.

In To Raise Wonderful Hell, a mother reconciles her ableist upbringing with a commitment to authentically and inclusively parent her own child.

Julie Kim writes about motherhood, inclusion, and her experiences raising a disabled child in an ableist world. She has worked in editorial roles at nonprofits and tech companies and currently serves on the board of City Arts & Lectures. Julie is represented by Kate Garrick at Salky Literary Management.

“My aim is to widen the lens through which readers view their own and others’ humanity, far beyond the strictures of ableist judgment.”

An exciting update from Julie: “In August, I graduated from The Book Project, a two-year program at The Lighthouse Writers Workshop in Denver. Moving to New York City has also revealed many new resources and opportunities, as well as the overwhelming prevalence (and emptiness) of false narratives about success and conformity. I’m revising my book’s final movement to reflect the complexities of living here.”
